Session Overview
In-game Date: 14th Falkhyn 1197md, Mid-Afternoon
- After speaking to the council, the heroes split to speak to different people.
- They start by speaking to Kerrywyn the Yellow, who is the innkeeper.
- Each hero rents a room from the inn.
- Speaking to Kerrywyn, they learn the following:
- He speaks about the militia's training and thinks that it won't be long before they kill Gryznyk.
- He says "We've got them runnin' scared!"
- He has a speculative eye as he watches Glint.
- He asks Davian what kind of man is Glint, who replies that he recently came into money and was replacing his clothing.
- The party go and speak to Walker the Shrub, who runs the only trading store in town.
- Davian and Elowen to speak with Ifon Picton whilst Magpie tracks down Kiint the Leper.
- Ifon Picton
- Davian thinks that Ifon looks familiar and after a lot of thinking, he remembered that Ifon was a regular at court, until he decided to leave.
- His philandering at the courts in New Aenoch left many a broken heart in his wake, and not a few angry and vengeful lords seeking his head.
- Davian speaks to Ifon to distract him whilst Elowen uses her Mind Reading to find out that yes, the rumours were very true.
- He has since decided on a life of anonymity. This decision does not rest well with him, as his natural inclination for travel and trouble making is bound to lead him to dire straits some day.
- He confirms that the bounty is real and how it can be claimed.
- Ifon was well versed in the ancient lore of the region and knows much about the history of the Horned One, the Curse of the Drunderry, and other sundries; parting with this information over a flagon of brew.
- Kiint the Leper
- Magpie goes to speak to Kiint the Leper, finding him hunting on the river edges.
- His disease has left him scarred and ostracized.
- He is a loner and spends most of his time hunting for the small gazelle so plentiful across the Drunderry.
- He knows much about the surrounding territory.
- He points out the old Imperial Road on the eastern side of the river.
- He explains that goblins regularly travel the river.
- He also shows a place he calls The Craggy Ridge, a high point located about a mile north of Malforten. It offers a decent view of the river valley leading down to Malforten. One can easily see the town from this vantage point.
- The party met up again outside the tavern and discuss what to do next.
- Elowen offers to scout the river by using Shape Shifting to take the form of a small hawk.
- Magpie flies off with her.
- Glint and Davian watch them fly off before making their way to the river.
- As they walk, one of the inhabitants of Malforten is coming the other way from the river.
- The man is behaving a bit shifty, his eyes widening and his face paling as they walked into view.
- His eyes darted in various directions before he decides to take a different route.
- The heroes looked at each other then sped faster to chase him.
- Since they were in good fettle in comparison to the townsman, the chase doesn't last long as they bring him down.
- Glint gives the townsman a filthy stare, intimidating him and threatening him with a gruff voice.
- The townsman's name is Gwion the Conner, he was returning from fishing.
- When Glint intimates that there was a traitor or spy in the town, he and Davian saw the flinch and they draw the details from him.
- Several months ago, while looking for a stray cow, he was caught by some goblins and threatened with death.
- He offered the goblins information on the militia and the reward in return for sparing his life.
- He now meets a goblin near the banks of the Drunderry River once a week or so on his frequent fishing trips.
- On these trips, he gives the goblins information on what is occurring in Malforten.
- Davian calms the townsman down and offers him a small bribe. In return to telling them everything, they would pay him enough for him to get away from Malforten.
- The heroes plan to stake out the river, knowing that Gwion would be meeting the goblins in two days.
In-game Date: _14th Falkhyn 1197md, Mid-Evening
- That evening, the heroes and the townsfolk were relaxing after food and brews.
- Glint was introduced to Enith by her father. There was no real interest between them and the half-orc pointed out that the party would be moving to make fame and fortunes.
- Griffry the Hat was quiet and introspective, looking lost.
- Eryl was training the militia.
- Blodwyn was socialising and talk about plants and herbs, and potions.
- Madith was sat by the fire, looking melancholy.
- Amanda is speaking to some of the wives about blessing the animals and healing the children; asking only for a tithe of grain or wine for the chapel.
- Gwion avoids speaking to the party but keeps an eye on them.
Key Learnings
- The Horned One (Unklar) had his fortress near the Dread Mire.
- The Empire of Aenoch was destroyed when the Horned One was summoned to the palace through the Void, subjugating the arch mage and killing the emperor and high priestess.
- Less than a hundred years ago, the Horned One was Unmade and a new Empress was enthroned to form the Empire of New Aenoch.
- The Fallow Hills stretch far to the north and are a rocky, tumultuous landscape that is difficult to travel through. The vegetation is thick with small trees, thorny brush, and other undergrowth. Steep, though short, cliff faces dot the hillsides. Overhangs are common and occasionally home to bears, wolves, and mountain lions. Few trails cross this land, and rarely do any civilized folk travel in this region, as it is home to orcs, goblins, and worse.
- The Drunderry River runs swiftly through the Fallow Hills and courses over numerous precipices and falls before emptying into the plains to its south. The Drunderry also acts as a demarcation between the eastern and western Fallow Hills.
- The hills there are riddled with natural caves and underground streams. It is rumoured that many an ancient shrine to the fey is located in this region. It is also rumoured to be the location of burial grounds of lords and ladies from ancient times, times preceding the arrival of the Horned One, the Age of Heroes.
- Gwion the Conner has been identified as a spy. He has been telling Gryznyk and the goblins about what's happening in Malforten.
- Griffry the Hat is known to be a priest of Corthain but has given up adventuring for the life of an ascetic (and, incidentally, much of what Corthain requires in a priest of this order).
Who Did They Meet?
- Kerrywyn the Yellow: so named because of his bright yellowish–blonde hair, which flows long and unbraided down his shoulders.
- Walker the Shrub: a grizzled old man with a large unkempt beard who spends more time chewing tobacco and ruminating than selling wares.
- Nelda: his wife who badgers Walker constantly about his profligate habits and wasteful or lazy nature.
- Ifon Picton: a aristocrat from Ascalon who left under a cloud.
- Kiint the Leper: a lonely man with a disfigured visage who goes hunting around the area.
- Gwion the Conner: a farmer and fisherman living with his wife, Owena, and one remaining child, his daughter Vivianna. His other daughter died of an illness some years ago, and he faults his move to Malforten for this. He regrets having come here and hopes to leave soon.
